Ponytail Updo

A formal ponytail updo with cascading curls is great for prom and flattering on almost every girl. High ponytails seem to accent the cheekbones and eyes. Let's get started....
Materials Needed:
- Bobby pins the shade of your hair
- 1 rubber band
- A small tooth comb
- Hairspray
- Curling iron
- Hair jewels to sprinkle throughout the ponytail
- Hot rollers
- Flat iron (optional)
- Optional: ponytail hair extension to give volume, length and shine to your ponytail.
Hair preparation: Start with a clean head of hair. Your hair can be either curly or straight. If your hair is straight, heat up your hot rollers and follow the directions in Curling Hair (This link opens in a new window) to roll your head in hot rollers. The hot rollers will add body and lessen your need to curl every strand of hair in the ponytail.
Step #1
After your hair is curled with hot rollers, part your hair from ear to ear about 2 inches in from the hair line. Put this hair up in a clip to keep it out of your way for now.

Step #2
Take the rest of your hair and pull it up into a high ponytail towards the crown of your head.

Step #3
Take a 1 to 2 inch section of hair at the top and left of the ponytail, and roll it around your fingers like you are rolling it around a roller. Slide the roll off of your fingers and bobby pin this barrel curl securely in place up and over the top of the ponytail.

Step #4
Take a 1-2 inch section of hair at the top and right of the ponytail, and roll it around your fingers like you are rolling it around a roller. (Same as step #3) Bobby pin as before up and over the ponytail on the right side.

Step #5
Curl individual 1/4 to 1/2 inch strands of hair with a curling iron using the Spiral Curls (This link opens in a new window) technique.
Pull these individual 1/4 to 1/2 inch strands of hair from the top of the ponytail and direct them up, over and around the barrel curls, so the barrel curls "blend in" better. You may need to hairspray these strands in place, and possibly bobby-pin some of them.
It is important to fill in holes and make the ponytail look symmetrical.
Step #6
Continue to shape individual strands in the rest of the ponytail by using the spiral curl technique on the surface of the ponytail. Your ponytail should look similar to this when done curling and shaping:

Step #7
Let the hair in the front down. If the hair is too curly or wavy, straighten hair with a flat iron

Step #8
Part hair in the front on the side. Take one side and pull it back and around like a headband at the base of your head until the ends reach under the ponytail. Bobby pin this hair under the ponytail. Do this on both sides.
Note: If your hair is not long enough to reach back and under the ponytail updo, secure this hair with a beautiful jeweled barrette as far back as your hair will reach.
Step #9
Optional: Place hair jewels (hair pins) throughout your ponytail updo.
