This half up half down prom hairstyle shows off your gorgeous locks, and still allows you to look like you have a formal hairstyle. It is easy to do, but it will take some time to style since all of the hair in the back will need to be curled individually in spiral curls. Here are the directions:
Materials Needed
- Ponytail holder the shade of your hair
- A couple of bobby pins the shade of your hair
- A small-barreled curling iron (1/2 to 1 inch barrel)
- Hairspray
- A small-toothed comb
Step #1
Separate the hair on the sides and the front of your head from the hair in the back. Take your small-toothed comb and use the pointed end to separate the hair from ear to ear. Smooth out this hair with your comb and secure in the back of your head with the elastic ponytail holder. Do not include your bangs (if you have them) in the ponytail as they will be to short too reach.
Optional: - If your hair is thin and needing more volume try Bump Up the Volume Clip-in Hair Extensions. These extensions will give your hair the attractive "bump" or height that is so popular on the top of the head and make your hair look thicker and more shiny. These particular extensions can be curled or straightened with heat styling products.

Step #2Grab a small chunk of hair from underneath the ponytail (about a 1 inch wide chunk of hair). Take this hair and wind it around the elastic ponytail holder until you run out of hair. Secure the ends under the ponytail with your bobby pins. To make sure this stays secure, make sure that one bobby pin crosses another bobby pin.
Step #3Curl all of the hair that is down and in the ponytail in spiral curls using your small-barreled curling iron. Click here for directions on how to make spiral curls.
Be gentle as you curl the hair in the ponytail, as you do not want the bobby pins to pull away releasing the hair that is wrapped.

Once you are done curling, lightly spray all of your hair, and after the hairspray has dried, lightly finger comb through your hair. Be careful not to overdue it, as you still want the hair to keep a spiral shape.

Now for the finishing touches......
Step #4
Curl small baby hairs on the sides in spiral curls.
Step #5
Style the bangs. If you have a flat iron, Use this on the bangs and gently curve it under as you release the hair over to the side of your face. Spray in place.
If you do not have a flat iron, run your curling iron gently over your hair from roots to ends and release to the side.

Spray your small-toothed comb with hairspray and gently comb the bangs to the side.

Voila! A beautiful half up half down prom hairstyle!
