Formal Hair Style Step by Step Directions
This formal hair style is a beautiful, pin-curled chignon that is perfect for weddings or prom. If you do not want to go through the time and effort of styling a chignon yourself, try this elegant clip-in chignon.
Hair preparation for formal hair style: blow-dry your hair straight.
Do not use one of the high-end straightening irons, as this will make your hair so straight that it will be hard to get the ends of your hair to make the beautiful pin curls you see in the picture.
Only use a high end straightening iron if your hair is naturally coarse and curly.

Clip your bangs up and out of the way

Step #2
Separate your hair so that you are making a mid to low ponytail on the back of your head, while leaving a lower section of hair out of the ponytail.

Step #3
Take a one inch section of hair and curl it close to the base of the ponytail. This creates a nice lift so that the hair pulls up and away from the ponytail holder easily to form a curl that you will pin in place.

Step #4
Curl the hair up and around your fingers. Push the curl over and off of your fingers onto its side. Pin in place.
Tips for bobby-pinning: When you enter the bobby-pin onto your pin curl, grab some of the hair that is lying flat beneath the pin-curl as well. Slide the pin up and then down in the opposite direction so that the hair will get “stuck” in position. When you are directing the bobby pin down, make sure that it is hidden under your curls.
Step #5
Repeat steps 3-5 with another 1 inch section of hair until you have pin-curled all of the hair in the ponytail.
Make sure that you work your way around the entire ponytail holder so that none of the holder is showing. Be creative! Wind some sections around and through other curls to create an interesting and complicated-looking mass of pin-curls.
Make sure that all sides of the pony-tail are evenly-balanced.
Don't put too many curls on one side of the ponytail holder.
Step #6
Once you have pin-curled all of the hair that is in the ponytail, start taking one inch sections from the bottom part of your hair and repeating steps 3-5 like above. Work these pieces up and into the curls you already created.

Step #7
Take your bangs down and out of the clip. Comb them with a small tooth comb and pull over to one side. If your bangs are long (such as in the example here) just bobby pin them under the pin curls.
If your bangs are not long enough to do this, spray your fine-tooth comb with hairspray and gently comb your bangs over to one side. You may want to secure this with a beautiful barrette.
Add a hair flower to your formal hair style to further complement your elegance.
