Curling Hair

There are many techniques for curling hair. You can do it the old-fashioned way with rags, or use your electric tools such as curling irons, flat irons or hot rollers.

Rag curls can be made using old rag strips or socks. You simply roll up your hair around the rags the same way you do hot rollers (directions shown below), tie the ends together and go to sleep.

Untie the rags in the morning and voila! Beautiful bouncy curls!

Tips: If your hair is fine or thin, only use 4-6 rags to do your entire head. Just group a bunch of hair together in one rag. I have fine, thin hair and I did more. I ended up with a huge mass of afro-type curls that was unruly.

Hot roller curls are bouncy and round and give you a lot of body in your hair. These curls create a great base for updos. Here are directions for making great hot roller curls:

Materials needed:

  • Hair spray
  • Hot rollers
  • Optional: Hair clips to help keep the hair on the rollers

Hair Preparation:

Wash hair and blow dry straight using a paddle or round brush.

Step #1

Plug in your hot rollers and make sure they are hot.

Step #2

Take a one inch section of hair and wrap the middle of the hair around the roller until you roll the ends on to the roller.

Step #3

Now, turn the roller under until you wrap the rest of your hair around the roller to the roots of your head. Secure the roller in place with a roller pin or a hair clip.

Tips:

  • You may want to spray each section of hair with hairspray or a setting spray before you wrap the hair around the roller for better hold. If you have hair that does not take curl well, you will need to use hairspray.
  • If you're having problems keeping the roller in place, put a clip on the roller instead of the hair pin.

    Step #4

Continue to wrap one inch sections of hair around the rollers until your entire head is rolled. Use the smaller rollers around the crown of your head and the larger rollers underneath.

Wait until the rollers are completely cool before you remove them.

    Step #5

Take out the roller pins and clips. Unravel the hair. Your curls should look like this:

Lightly comb through your hair with your fingers to spread out the curls.
