This modern beehive hairstyle looks great with a wide headband and hoop earrings to give you a retro 1960's look.
Materials Needed:
- Bobby pins the shade of your hair
- Fine-tooth comb
- Hairspray
- Paddle brush
- Optional: Wide Headband
Hair preparation: None really - If your hair is dirty, great! Freshly washed hair tends to be slippery and hard to hold, so if your hair is dirty, do not feel the need to wash it. You can do this hairdo on curly or straight hair, but if you have curly hair and want your hair to look like the pictures here, straighten your hair with a ceramic flat iron using the instructions shown on this link: Learn to straighten your hair with a ceramic flat iron.
Step #1
Separate the front and sides of your hair into two sections. If you have bangs, you can keep them down and just separate off the hair behind the bangs.

Step #2
Take the rest of the hair in the back and pull it up into a high ponytail. Secure with a ponytail holder.

Step #3
Back-comb all of the ponytail, starting at the base of the ponytail. To back-comb effectively, hold the ends of your hair in one hand and with your comb in the other hand, comb "backwards" - or down the hair shaft towards your roots.

Step #4
Turn the entire back-combed ponytail under so it makes a big "bouf". Bobby-pin the ends of the ponytail in place. It should look like this:
Step #5
Release the hair in the front and sides and back-comb all of this hair.
Step #6
Lightly brush this mass of hair back and over the high ponytail "bouf". Make sure that you brush lightly so that the back-combed hair underneath does not lose its height. Bobby-pin the hair that you brushed over the ponytail under the ponytail "bouf". Make sure that you bobby pin all of the ends in. Here are pictures of this process:
If your hair is really long, it may be easier to pin the hair under the "bouf", leaving the ends out and then go back and pin the ends under. That is what we did:
Continue to bobby-pin hair back and over the ponytail-bouf until all is tucked neatly under and secure.
When done pinning, your beehive hairstyle should look something like the picture below. As you can see, her bangs were not long enough to make it up and over the high ponytail. You can either just let them hang to the side, or use a wide head band to hold them back (also shown below).
If you hair is thin or you want to avoid all the damaging back-combing, try Bump Up the Volume clip-in hair extensions.
